More Than A Shoulder to Cry On

Women are hardwired to crave close friendships, and these bonds can provide us with unique benefits. Here, a few things researchers have recently uncovered about the power of friendships.

The friendship effect: Mountains become molehills

How it works: In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, researchers asked participants to stand at the base of a steep hill and estimate how tough it would be to climb. Those standing with a friend gauged the ascent to be less steep compared with those who were alone.

What's more... The longer the study participants had known their friends, the more gentle they estimated the incline to be.

The friendship effect: Disease becomes less deadly

How it works: Harvard research has shown that breast cancer patients with no friendship network are four times more likely to die from the disease than those with ten or more close friends.

What's more... Studies have also shown that social support can lower blood pressure, protect against dementia, and reduce the risk of depression.

The friendship effect: Stress feels more manageable

How it works: When women are stressed, their brains release the feel-good hormone oxytocin, which encourages them to bond. (Male brains, on the other hand, are more subject to the effects of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which promote the fight-or-flight response.)

What's more... "The female response is much more effective in mitigating stress and may be one reason women tend to outlive men," says Terri Apter, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Cambridge.

Life After Loss

Moving on Doesn't Mean Forgetting

By Edward T. Creagan, M.D.
Mayo Clinic Oncologist

Like some of you who posted comments, I've been touched by the tragic death of a young person. In these circumstances I often ask my patients, "How do you deal with this tragic loss?" And the answer is fairly consistent: "You don't deal with it."

You simply move on as best you can, one day at a time, and acknowledge that there is a new normal. Things are never again the way they were. The loss is part of who you are. For example, someone who has lost a child will be reminded of it every time he or she is asked, "How many children do you have?"

Let me share with you a story. A patient came to our clinic and I noticed this person had a religious tattoo that included two names. The patient shared with me that these were close friends who tragically died under unusual circumstances. The tattoo was a visual reminder that these individuals would never be forgotten.

10 Promises to My Dog

So many movies about pets, especially dogs, that so touching, educating, and amazing of course. Lately, I’ve watched 10 Promises to My Dog. The 10 Promises to My Dog (original title: 犬と私の10の約束 Inu to watashi no 10 no yakusoku) is a Japanese movie directed by Katsuhide Motoki, and released by Shochiku on March 15, 2008. It’s based on a novel by Hare Kawaguchi which was inspired by the anonymously-authored article “The Ten Commandments of Dog Ownership”. And it’s casted by Akane Osawa, Akiko Aitsuki, Akira Fuse, Chizuru Ikewaki, Etsushi Toyokawa, Hana Ebise, Lena Tanaka, Mayuko Fukuda, Mina Fujii, Pierre Taki, Reiko Takashima, Ryo Kase, Shota Sato, and Takashi Sasano.

Just like Hachiko (another wonderful doggie movie that shows complete loyalty of a dog to its keeper), this movie also shows us about friendship between Socks (a cute orphan dog) and Akari (its person).

The 10 promises refers to 10 rules Akari should obey as she decides to keep Socks, a cute puppy she finds at backyard, as her pet. The rules are (as if the dog said this):

Why Do People Lie?

When you find someone lies to you, you may get disappointed, angry, and mad. That’s normal reaction. But, take a time for a while, then let your heart and mind have a space to understand why he did it, so you can see the point of the problem you’re heading up to know how you should react with it.

Here are some reasons why people lie (as I got from “Psychology of Lying - 3 Bizarre Reasons Why People Lie”, an article  written by Michael Lee at http://EzineArticles.com).

Fear
One of the reasons why a person tells a lie is because of the fear of possible consequences involved when telling the truth.
This psychology of lying is quite prevalent in younger generations when they are hiding something sensitive from their friends and family members -- opting to tell a lie rather than being punished for telling the truth.
It is a sign of escape of possible punishment that comes with the act of telling the truth.

Self-Image
Improving their own image in the eyes of their friends and families is one of the reasons why people tell a lie. In order to uplift their social on par with others, a person would often create stories, usually on the spot, to make sure that the other party is kicked out of the limelight.
This psychology of lying is just a temporary rise on the social ladder, and will often be replaced with embarrassment when the truth comes out.

Is He Lying?

I think everyone ever lied in his life. No matter how simple or complex it is, for a good intension or bad one it meant, in the form of bluffing or omitting the truth it done, or anything else. Everyone ever did. But, can everyone exactly detect a lie?

Lies are extremely difficult to detect. Research shows the average person barely does any better than chance. Part of the reason may be there's so much misinformation about how to detect lies floating around. Years of work in psychology, including research from real police interviews conducted by Aldert Vrij and colleagues, provides guidance on which nonverbal signals do and which don't signal lying (Vrij, 2006). In this page, I’d share with you (as copied from PsyBlog at http://www.spring.org.uk/).

First we've got to dump the misconceptions:
  1. People don't actually fidget and look away when they're lying. Even some police forces still have this in the manual even though it's just plain wrong.
  2. Even classic highly researched signs of lying are not that good. Less blinking, more pauses in talking, vocal tension, pupil dilation, chin raise and nervousness don't consistently (across different people) mean someone is lying.
  3. It may be particularly difficult to detect lies in close friends or partners as we have come to trust them and don't expect them to lie to us.

Thank You

I prayed to God for a simple smile on my face,
cause I was sick of those unsloved problems.

and you know what,
I've just realized that God has sent you for me to paint a genuine smile on my face.
and I'd like to say, "THANK YOU."

PS: Special note for those who sent me spirit, simple smiles, even just a simple "hi". I owe you much.

I never know exactly what I''ll see and find in the future.
But I'm sure it'll be something good if I have you standing by my side.
